Chelsea could end up making a move for Blackburn Rovers midfielder and Tottenham target, Adam Wharton, before the deadline passes.
Wharton is a man in-demand after some fine performances for Rovers this season. The likes of Tottenham are known to be keen on Wharton, while Crystal Palace are also believed to have had an offer rejected as well. However, Chelsea could now get involved in the mix and after sending Paul Winstanley to watch him in person, could make a bid.
Chelsea considering bid for Adam Wharton
According to journalist Alan Nixon, writing on his Patreon, Chelsea have decided to join the hunt for Wharton.
The midfielder is believed to be worth at least £25m to Blackburn, with the Ewood Park club having already turned down an offer close to £19m for their star man.
With just days to go until the deadline, Blackburn know this might be their best chance of getting a massive fee for their young player.
With Chelsea now involved as well, Rovers will be hoping to trigger a mini bidding war and eventually, get the money they feel is right for Wharton.
Tottenham, meanwhile, are unlikely to splash out on Wharton at this stage despite being keen.
A lot of money for another young player
Chelsea seem to be stockpiling young players at the moment and whether or not that pays off in the future remains to be seen.
The problem Chelsea fans will have with signing Adam Wharton for £25m is that as it stands, he’s not going to improve the first XI at all. Much like a lot of the signings made under the Todd Boehly era, he’s a player with potential who they need to nurture for the future.
Of course, there is value in adding top young talents and Wharton is one of the best players in the Championship in his age group.
But in terms of January signings who might have an impact for the club, Chelsea could probably do much better than this.
